Digital Optical Method
ERDC CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING RESEARCH LABORATORY
This technology was the Army winner in the OSD Office of Technology Transition & DoD TechMatch Hot Technologies Contest. The ERDC-CERL along with the University of Illinois have developed a new plume opacity measurement technology know as Digital Optical Method (DOM). This new algorithm was developed to apply light extinction theory and estimate opacity values. Along with the algorithm; two models(transmission and contrast were developed to more accurately measure opacity. DOM estimates the opacity of plumes in the out door ambient environment by analyzing digital images that are produced by off-the-shelf digital cameras. The American Society for Testing and Materials currently employs US Method 9, which relies on human visual perception to measure opacity. The DOM method provides improved consistency and accuracy of the measurements and permits retention of a digital record of the event. After many test and analysis it was concluded that 100% of DOM readings meet the criteria of Method 9. Benefits Reduction of labor costs Improved accuracy Reliability and objectivity Minimized litigation Enduring records in the form of digital photographs
