Non-Invasive Corrosion Sensor
NAVSEA CRANE
Engineers at the NAVSEA Warfare Center Crane have designed a sensor for real-time measurement of corrosion. It is a small, non-invasive sensor based on a thermo-electric module that is designed to electronically monitor the heat differential resulting from corrosion. The sensor consists of two ceramic wafers connected by semi-conductor pellets. When a heat differential exists between the two surfaces, a voltage is produced. The sensor detects thermal output of active corrosion and differentiates it from surrounding environmental conditions.
